In the first weeks of my Canada trip I stayed at my aunts home. This time ends with the trip to Tofino. After Tofino I will bike on my own through the country. To be honest, that was two weeks ago and I had not enough time to write about it or upload some pictures. But here we go ...
Tofino is an old hippy and surfer village on the west coast of Vancouver Island. The village is very isolated, it needs a long car trip to it. Therefore it is quiet, you find yourself in a rough nature with many big waves in the ocean (perfect for surfers), lots of wind and rain … or, when you are lucky sun and not to much wind. We are staying in a nice logging lodge for some days and I can enjoy the area. Nowadays the hippy and surfer village became a very touristy place. You can rent kayaks, a plane around the mountains or take surf lessons.
I enjoyed of course only the nature walks, that is, why I am there. Surfing might be something I could try … one day … when the water is not that cold xD
I discovered some nice rainforest walks on board walkways or enjoyed walking in the long beach. On the beach was some days ago a death whale. Scientists have still no idea why the whale ended up there and decided to take the bones to a museum (The first idea was to let the nature take it back). Maybe the wolves are the reason for the decision. There are quite a lot of them around and making troubles. I was just able to make some pictures of there footprints on the beach.
The days passed fast, after a rainy start we got some sunshine, what in my eyes was a perfect mixture for Tofino: rain in the rainforest and sun for walking on the beach and in the village. The village itself is not very interesting, they spend more and more money in making the streets looking nice and fancy … not what I had in my mind for that kind of a village.
I really can understand why some nature loving people or surfer went to this places. It is a shame that now the tourism took over and you can't see anything of the original live. But there are some more places on the wild west coast which are not jet a tourism hotspot, good for those ones who know them.
After Tofino I started my trip to Strathcona Provinal Park with my bike, I write about it the next days. See ya, Rick
